Fixed the Morning Startup Smoke Issue on My 2004 GMC Yukon Denali!
I had an issue with white smoke coming out of the tailpipe on early morning startups with my 2004 GMC Yukon Denali. A bit of research directed me to this valve cover which has the PCV valve built into it. Apparently the original valve cover design didn't allow oil to pass through back and forth easily, leading to a clogged PCV valve. The videos I had watched weren't the exact vehicle. One was for a 2007 Yukon which is a generation ahead of mine, and others were for the 5.3L base or Tahoe models. I can tell you that swapping this valve cover did fix the issue on my 2004 Yukon Denali 6.0L. I had already changed the valve cover gaskets on both sides with a Fel Pro kit a couple of years back. I was a bit annoyed about putting the Dorman gasket on there, but it appears well constructed. My ... I was a bit annoyed about putting the Dorman gasket on there, but it appears well constructed. My Fel Pro gasket was oil stained and fell off when the valve cover was removed. I had read previous reviews about the Dorman falling off during the install and we possibly needing some high temp RTV to hold it into place, but the gasket was pretty solidly in the cover grooves, and did not move during install. If you have this issue you only need the one side. I'm relieved, because when people hear white smoke they're telling you you have a blown head gasket or cracked head, or something else severe that basically means you need a new engine, or a new car in the case of a car this age. If you've got white smoke on startup, I'd definitely try this before doing anything drastic like replacing the engine, or the engine internals. P.S. It's possible to modify your existing valve cover by drilling holes into it and fixing this issue, but it wasn't worth experimenting and re-assembling just to see if you did it right. If cost is an issue, there's other aftermarket no name brands that cost about half as much as this one. It's a piece of metal, so I don't expect there to be any problems if you went that route, but I'd rather just do it once the easy way.
