Easy DIY Car Repair
Total job time: 1-1.5 hours max Tools needed: Socket set with 8mm (near engine), 13mm (carrier bearing), 17mm? (rear differential) sockets (Just make sure you have a metric set), assorted socket extensions, hammer. NOTE: Check Autozone site for repair steps, or search on YouTube. Jack up one side of the car (both front and back wheels). Use jack stands!!! Make sure you're on level ground!!! Chock the 2 remaining wheels on the ground (both directions). Put it in neutral. I loosened all the bolts first, 6 at engine, 2 in the middle, 4 at the back end. I was able to grab the driveshaft and spin it with my hands so that the bolts at the top moved to the bottom so they would be easy to get to. Once they're all loose, remove rear bolts, then carrier bearing bolts, then the bolts near ... Total job time: 1-1.5 hours max Tools needed: Socket set with 8mm (near engine), 13mm (carrier bearing), 17mm? Once they're all loose, remove rear bolts, then carrier bearing bolts, then the bolts near the engine. Use the hammer to break the corrosion seal on the back yoke. If you're on your back doing this, don't be directly under the driveshaft. ;-) Repeat in reverse order to install. Once done, drive around a little and then check the bolts once more...just to be sure. I use never-seize on the bolts to make it easier if any future disassembly is needed. If you follow torque specs for this installation, cut 5-10% off the indicated torque. Something about it being easier to over-torque the bolts with them being slippery, I guess. Knowing what I know now, I can probably swap out a similar drive shaft in about 30 minutes. Not a hard repair at all. Also, if your carrier bearing was in in bad shape like mine was (flopping around within the saddle) then replace the entire shaft. It's more work to just do the carrier bearing and chances are the rest of the driveshaft u-joints are equally worn or close to it. Do the job once, not 2 or more times.
