Sachs is better than Behr
Overheating 1998 BMW 528i. Replaced 2 yr old Behr fan clutch with new Behr fan clutch. Problem continues. Went through months of testing, checking, bleeding system, part swapping. Finally bought a new Sachs fan clutch because everything said that the new Behr was bad. Put it in and problem solved. You can test the fan clutch by letting the engine come to operating temperature (this is for fan clutches with the straight piece on the front center piece, not the spiral) and then try to stop it with a small rolled up magazine, gently against the fan blades. If it stops, it's bad. If there is resistance and it wants to keep spinning, it's good. The reason is that there is a liquid that sits around the shaft of the nut and holds the fan to the shaft, so that it is difficult to turn, when ... Overheating 1998 BMW 528i. The reason is that there is a liquid that sits around the shaft of the nut and holds the fan to the shaft, so that it is difficult to turn, when cold. As the engine starts and the fan spins up, centripetal force moves the liquid away from the internal shaft and the fan spins freely - so not as fast as the engine (no need until the engine heats up and the thermostat opens so that coolant circulates through the radiator). When the engine reaches operating temperature and goes hotter - meaning more cooling is needed, there is something in the fan clutch, around the internal shaft, that expands with heat and grips the shaft so that now the fan spins faster. If that last step doesn't happen, your car will start to get hotter - and potentially overheat. BEHR failed the operating temperature test - both the 2 year old one, and the new one (what are the odds?). The Sachs fan clutch passed with flying colours - so cooling system works properly again.
