Backing Plate Installation Summary
If you buy this, make sure you buy the shoes and spring kit as well. And don't forget some PB Blaster. Including the time it took to drive to the parts store (twice,) it took nearly 7 hours to put them in. The old backing plates were removed by supporting the cast iron portion with several 2 x 4's, putting the bolts part way into the bearing hub and pounding on their heads with a 2 lb sledge. The hub itself was removed by putting the rotor on backwards, using the lug nuts to hold it tight to the hub, and pounding on its top and bottom with the sledge The actuators were seized and had to be coaxed back into working condition with a hammer and vise grips. One of them got bent, causing the shoes not to fully contract, so the the rotor wouldn't go back on after everything else had been ... If you buy this, make sure you buy the shoes and spring kit as well. And don't forget some PB Blaster. Had to completely remove the new backing plate and reinstall it a 2nd time after fixing the actuator. We also had to make a 2nd trip to the parts store to buy a 3/8 drive breaker bar. There's just not enough clearance to use a 1/2 drive and socket. All in all, it's not a difficult job, but it took a lot of muscle to get things apart and a lot of cleaning and de-rusting to get it all back together..
